10 Best Skill Position Groups in the NFL Heading into 2023 Training Camp

Updated: Jul 12, 2023

With the NFL season set to officially begin when training camp starts on July 18th, I figured it was time for my first NFL blog. This list came from the disrespect I was seeing on my Broncos recently. After last season's disaster, no one seems eager to hop on the hype train this time around, and for good reason. I decided to make this list because I see our skill position group as one of the strengths of this team, however, it appears that others do not agree with me. I have seen many lists and none have Denver inside the top twelve; ESPN even has them as low as 24th.

(For the sake of this list, Skill positions are WR, TE, and RB)

10.

Buffalo BIlls: (WR: Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Khalil Shakir TE: Dawson Knox RB: James Cook)

Again, this is probably another one that you would expect to be higher, but Quarterback is not included in this list and so therefore the Bills best offensive player can not be taken into account. Buffalo's offense has been unbelievable over the past couple years, and that is mostly thanks to Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs. However, Buffalo has struggled to find a consistent run game through Devin Singletary, Zach moss and James Cook, and that is why they are down here at 9.

9.

Las Vegas Raiders: (WR: Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Jakobi Meyers TE: Austin Hooper RB: Josh Jacobs) The raiders are an interesting group to judge. Davante Adams is the leagues top wideout and Josh Jacobs led the NFL in rushing in 2022. So it would seem simple, right? Well not really, because Jacobs had an incredible season last year, his career numbers are significantly inflated. His massive year was kind of out of blue, he had already played three seasons in the league as a middle of the road back. Then there is Hunter Renfrow, who, at times looks like a pro bowl wide receiver, and other times is invisible. Overall, the raiders have a ton of talent and if they can put it all together they have top five potential.

8.

Denver Broncos: (WR: Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick TE: Greg Dulcich RB: Javonte Williams)

Well here they are, I bet you expected me to put them top 5 didn't you? Nah, I'm not that delusional. However, I do truly believe that as awful as this offense has been over the last 8 years, it is not the play-makers' fault. They have been subject to bad offensive lines, poor quarterback play and incompetent coaching. Javonte Williams has had three career healthy starts, in those games he has 371 scrimmage yards and 18 receptions. He also led the NFL in broken tackle percentage in his rookie season. Tim Patrick had back-back 730+ yard receiving seasons with 0 drops in 2020. Courtland Sutton had over 1,100 yards and 6 scores in 2019, and Jerry Jeudy finally got to showcase his talent down the stretch last year, featuring a hat trick, a 200 yard game and finishing the season with over 1,000 scrimmage yards even though he missed 3 games.

7.

New Orleans Saints: (WR: Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Tre'quan Smith TE: Tayson Hill RB: Alvin Kamara)

This one is very intriguing to me because of how many variables there are. However, in this list I am ranking these groups mostly based on ceiling for this upcoming season. Michael Thomas could ascend back to his place as a top 10 or even top 5 receiver. Olave had a serious case for OROY last year and Alvin Kamara has been a perennial top 7 running back over the past 5 years. I'm excited to see what this offense does.

6.

Seattle Seahawks: (WR: Tyler Lockett, DK Metccalf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba TE: Noah Fant RB: Kenneth Walker)

Here is where the next tier officially begins in my opinion. The top 6 are all very close to one another and they are all full of unreal talent. The Seahawks in particular have a really young group of playmakers and their offense will be very frightening if Geno can keep up with his season last year. Many thought Kenneth Walker to be deserving of the Offensive Rookie of the Year award a season ago, but alas, Garrett Wilson of the Jets ended up taking it home. Regardless of that fact, the Seahawks

have some real field stretchers and a powerful run game, expect play action to be extremely effective.

5.

Jacksonville Jaguars: (WR: Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones TE: Evan Engram RB: Travis Etienne

The Jags likely boast the most complete, balanced and deep skill position group in the entire league. Their offense was outstanding a season ago, leading to a last to first turnaround in the AFC south. This was mostly because of a coaching change and the acquisition of weapons for star QB Trevor Lawrence. Now what did they do this year? They added Calvin Ridley, who is a bona fide WR1 and showed potential to be a perennial top 5. This team is getting a lot of love this offseason, and for good reason.

4.

Miami Dolphins: (WR: Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Braxton Berrios TE: Durham Smythe RB: Jeff Wilson Jr.)

There isn't much to talk about here. No need to justify having them in the top 5. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle may be the two fastest players in the NFL, and they are both outstanding wide receivers who can play inside and out. They are matchup nightmares and they destroy defenses, enough said.

3.

Cincinnati Bengals: (WR: Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd TE: Irv Smith Sr. RB: Joe Mixon) The Cincinnati Bengals went to the super Bowl two years ago and the AFC championship last year with mediocre defenses and below average offensive lines. What does that mean? It means they've got one heck of a skill position group. Obviously Joe Burrow has played a large part in that, but the consistency of Mixon and the explosiveness of this receiver corps makes it easily a top 5 unit, and many would be happy to argue its superiority over the final two teams.

2.

Philadelphia Eagles: (WR: A.J Brown, DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins TE: Dallas Goedert RB: D'Andre Swift)

Well, they may have lost to the chiefs last February, but they didn't today. The Eagles are the only team that really rivals the cohesiveness of Jacksonville's group. They have three real starting caliber NFL wide receivers, a top 5 tight end, and a running back with an exorbitant amount of talent who dominates when healthy. This Eagles team went to the Super Bowl last year and all they did was add a guy who averages 5.5 yards per touch and has 25 touchdowns through 40 games.

1.

San Francisco 49ers: (WR: Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauaun Jennings TE: George Kittle RB: Christian McCaffrey)

Who else? The 49ers may have gotten blown away in the NFC championship last year, but it is hard to win when you are literally playing without a quarterback . Brandon Aiyuk is a 1,000 yard receiver, Deebo Samuel is a first team All-Pro who totaled nearly 1800 yards and 14 TDs as a pass catcher. That is truly ridiculous. Not to mention top 3 TE and personality, George Kittle, as well as Christian McCaffrey, who is one of three players ever to record a 1,000/1,000 season. To conclude, San Francisco boasts one of the best skill position groups that the NFL has seen in a long long time. These guys are my pick to win Super Bowl 58.
